Hirsau is a place with a rich and varied history dating back over a thousand years. It was founded as a simple structure in the early Middle Ages and flourished in the 11th century, when one of the most important Benedictine cloisters in Germany was built. Today the ruins of the former cloister churches of St. Aurelius and St. Peter still bear witness to this period.

The Middle Ages and local history
The cloister museum is located in the former ducal forester’s house. Precious mediaeval items are on display; the history of the community into the 20th century is also documented.
