Museum in the Majolica

Opening hours, admission fees, getting there

This museum, which is located in the factory‘s former administration building, displays some 300 selected works that give visitors an overview of the history of Karlsruhe‘s Majolica Manufactory from its early days under margravial rule to its later history as a state-operated factory.

From the beginning, when painter Hans Thoma founded the factory in 1901, it has worked closely with independent artists and designers, including painters Erwin Spuler and Karl Hubbuch, sculptors Alfred Lörcher and Bernhard Hoetger, Bauhaus ceramics artist Otto Lindig, and – more recently – Markus Lüpertz, Johannes Grützke, or Thomas Lenk. At a very early phase, the factory‘s ceramic products for use in buildings made a name for themselves well beyond Karlsruhe. The exhibit shows customised works made for buildings in Berlin and Kiel as well as pieces for homes and gardens which could be ordered from a catalog.
