Mycenae - The Legendary World of Agamemnon

When Heinrich Schliemann, in November 1876, brought to light at Mycenae an array of gold treasures in Grave Circle A, among which the famous funerary “mask of Agamemnon”, a hitherto unknown civilization took shape and identity. It was named “Mycenaean” after the place of discovery of these first finds and at the time its treasures were associated with the legendary kings in Homer’s epics.

More than 400 select objects, loans from the most important Greek museums, are on display in Karlsruhe, among them the legendary finds from Schliemann’s excavations at Mycenae and Tiryns. There will also be exhibited, for the first time, impressive jewelry from the so-called “Griffin Warrior Tomb”, an un-looted shaft grave discovered near the Mycenaean palace of Pylos.
