Are full-voiced renditions of the “Badnerlied (The Song of the People of Baden)”, praise of the cosy lifestyle or recollections of the liberal traditions of this model state, the so-called Musterländle, expressions of the culture of Baden? This much is clear: there is hardly another part of Germany in which the regional identity is upheld with as much relish as in the south-west. But what is Baden really all about? Which historical events and people defined this region? How much is still alive in people’s minds, and which developments showed effects beyond the state border?
The comprehensive state exhibition, which is being held on the occasion of the 900th anniversary of the region of Baden, will provide answers to these questions. In 1112, the title of the “Margrave of Baden” was recorded in a document for the first time. Approximately 400 exhibits relate the history of Baden in stories, from the fragmented dominion of medieval times, to the liberal tendencies in the Grand Duchy, and finally, to the state of Baden-Württemberg as we know it today. After passing through various interactive stations, visitors will arrive at the following conclusion: Baden is more than just a name!
The exhibition will be supplemented by a varied and region-wide programme, and also by a richly illustrated catalogue with essays by renowned authors.
