Stained glass in modern art

The fascination with backlit colour

Pictures rendered in glass, colour and light ― stained glass and painted glass were traditionally found in sacred spaces. In modern times, however, they have emancipated themselves from their original context and evolved into free-style artistic glazing as well as art in smaller formats. The medium has remained true to its roots, however: in recent years significant artists such as Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Neo Rauch and Markus Lüpertz have completed major church-window projects.

The Badisches Landesmuseum is presenting this multi-facetted art form as part of a major special exhibition. The works of famous masters such as Johan Thorn Prikker, Georg Meistermann, Ludwig Schaffrath, Johannes Schreiter and Emil Wachter are included. At the same time, however, there are also representatives of the international avant-garde such as Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Otto Dix, Jean Cocteau and Fernand Léger, all of whom did outstanding work in glass.

The exhibition is accompanied by a wide range of tours, presentations, workshops, museum talks and a podium discussion.
